Chalo Hyderabad

“We forgot one bag !!” exclamation was heard as we entered home at H’bad. We had just experienced ‘Chalo Delhi’ movie in real life! The difference was: in place of Vinay Pathak & Lara Datta, 7 family members were involved. Luckily someone remembered that taxi could still be located while getting minor repair done at Chevrolet showroom. Finally bag could be recovered before taxi left for its original town, Nanded. Bag was at extreme corner under rear seat. This was sweet end of roller-coaster ride between Hyderabad and Nasik.

The exciting events of last 2 days were a result of money making scheme – ‘Tatkal’ of Indian Railways . Tickets were booked months in advance but they remained in ‘waiting list’. It was possibly because tatkal scheme bookings done on previous day of journey got confirmed. Railway had earned additional charges.

Actually it started like: We, group of 6 family members had booked tickets 2.5 months in advance. We had also planned to take Shirdi Sai Baba blessings before reaching to Nasik for marriage. Just 2 hours before boarding the train, it was noticed that tickets of 2 group members still remained in waiting list & they had to experience virtual Sai Baba blessings with packed tiffin & suitcases at respective homes itself.  Pandora’s box had just opened.

We, the remaining 4 group members bravely boarded the train with RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation). Strategy was chalked out to kill night with 2 berths amongst 4 in the group. After few hours, Ticket Checker declared availability of required 2 additional berths. Big sigh of relief! Luckily our compartment was also free from other disturbances like snoring co-passengers or noisy children.

Group completed 1st phase of journey & reached Manmad junction. Waiting room was occupied as there was time for connecting train. Announcements were going on in background: some were about delays of other trains too. Thankfully our train was not late. It was fun to explore various eating options at platform. There was lot of activity at junction: passenger train, parcel train, goods train, super fast non stopping train etc.  Hats off to railway network. In journey time was passed in overhearing discussion of co-passengers. Hit topic was about luggage lost from AC compartment near notorious Bhusawal station.

The group reached marriage hall & suddenly the group leader realized that his proud possession – return ticket - for return journey also, just connecting train was confirmed & main journey was in waiting list. Now there remained no option but to bow before tatkal scheme agent. Whopping distance of 575 km could not be covered by any other means. Buses would have been very tiring & facility of flights was not available.

Our perfect host understood our helpless situation. Contact to ‘tatkal agent’ was possible only through host in new city. Group went on worrying about return journey while enjoying marriage functions. The wedding eve musical night was about to start & it was realized that the anchor was running around for tickets with script in his pocket. The performers somehow covered up the situation & music program still went rocking with small hitches in between. Marriage is no fun without such tensed moments right?

Finally tatkal agent made tickets available for sleeper class instead of AC class in some other inaugural train & group which had current count of 5 instead of 4, reached junction to catch train for main journey. Again group had good time exploring various stalls at platform while waiting for train. Some time was spent in sorting clothes available in luggage to use as make shift bed rolls in sleeper class. Many stall owners were cautioning that our train had not still gone in upward direction so there was no question of its in-time return for our boarding. During journey, hawkers always give exact estimation of delay. The group had ignored these conversations as no one was ready to believe the worst news. Finally the news bomb exploded & railway authorities accepted the fact that train schedule was still out of control.

Luckily there was availability with some other train ‘Nandigram Express’ to reach Nanded. That means at least half the distance to H’bad would be covered.  There were many mobile call exchanges with family (who were sleeping at respective homes) & finally it was accepted that this was the best possible option. However, ticket checker told that our current berths would be occupied at Aurangabad in travel & he would give some other berths at that time. Since beggars are no choosers, everyone agreed & hit the berths to catch up on well deserved sleep to get over tiredness due to marriage. At god forsaken hours in midnight, berths had to be exchanged. The group somehow managed to do luggage & berth shifting after recovering from slumber. When we were arranging luggage in new compartment, some co-passenger who was possibly returning from washroom in half sleep thought we were fiddling with his luggage. He was deeply embaressed when he realized that it was a wrong (compartment) number. Journey can be really crazy sometimes. Once again everyone slept like logs on new berths & at sun godly hours at 5:30 am, train destination Nanded arrived.

Now it was time to shift in ‘Chevrolet Travera’ taxi & head towards H’bad.  The cab’s driver didn’t seem to respect any pot hole or speed breakers. The bumpy ride caused some health problems to the member who had volunteered for rear seat. At Nizamabad, group took small break to freshen up & seat exchange. Now, perfect highway (NH 44) was hit after Nizamabad & there was no stoppage except toll gate till H’bad traffic welcomed us at Medchal.

Finally the group happily reached home. Though the journey of ‘Chalo Hyderabad’ was completed with many modes of transport, group had finally reached without losing any luggage or any other major delay.

Such crazy experiences are part of life. The major lesson learnt this time was: do not to step out of house without confirmed train tickets!

‘Life of Pi’ – spiritual insight with adventure

The movie based on popular fiction novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel had created lot of curiosity. Trailer’s realistic photography & animation made the file a ‘must see’. The reviews were tremendously encouraging. People who have read the novel feel their imagination about each frame in novel would be disturbed with movie but story is enhanced in all aspects in movie so more fun.

We booked show at latest Maheshwari Parmeshwari Mall in heart of the city. Mall seemed adaptive to crowd from surrounding city area in terms of food choice etc.  It was fun to share excitement of child sitting next to us when 3D movie was displayed; he exclaimed ‘Dagarke ostundi’ (‘coming near’ in Telugu).

‘Life of Pi’ directed by Ang Lee left great impact on me. Movie doesn’t show India (around summer 1977) in unnecessary negative frame so felt happy. There is lot of depth in thoughts discussed in the movie.

Movie starts with melodious song and paradise like scene of zoo owned by Pi’s father. Pi is shown as teenage boy with self confidence to re-christen himself as ‘Pi’ to avoid embarrassment with distortion of his name.. ‘Piscine Molitor’.

Pi is an intelligent child & continuously explores his surrounding, religion etc. He tries to understand all three religions Hinduism, Christianity & Islam. He has beautiful family - caring elder brother Ravi & understanding, encouraging parents (Tabu, Adil Hussain) .

Pi wants to develop friendship with Bengal Tiger ‘Richard Parker’ (clerical error with real name ‘Thirsty’) by feeding flesh with own hands. Ravi brings father to pull Pi back in time and Pi’s hand is saved. Father teaches him that ferocious animals can’t be your friends. He says, “You see more in tiger’s eyes than your own reflection staring back at you”.

Pi’s adolescence & attraction / friendship towards girl ‘Anandi’ are sweetly portrayed.

Pi (actor Suraj Sharma) feels frustrated when he is forced to accept migration to Canada due to changing political situation in India. The shipwreck is filmed perfectly to scare you with feeling of being in ‘Pacific Ocean’ on stormy night. Pi is terribly upset with loss of his family but doesn’t have time to mourn as his life boat companions (who are wild animals)  keep him on high alert for survival. Carnivorous animals will surely kill other living specie when hungry. The hyena kills injured zebra. ‘Orange Juice’ - Orangutan fights back but hyena makes surprise fatal attack after initial retreat. Finally hyena is killed by tiger ‘Richard Parker’ - RP.

Now we have thrilling story about Pi’s efforts to survive in Pacific with RP – adult Bengal tiger. In story form we understand structure of life boat, material present for on-board for survival, ocean currents etc. Pi uses  wild animal’s psychology about territory & trains the beast as taming is not possible. Pi feeds RP with rain water & fishes to ensure own safety. Pi realizes that being alert with RP is keeping him alive too.

There is some wonderful photography, animation about luminescent jelly fish, gigantic whale’s somersault, herd of dolphins, flying fishes etc. Pi traps & kills sizable fish to feed RP. It’s probably for first time that Pi has killed someone and asks for forgiveness. Floating island of carnivorous algae inhabited by meerkats provides mild breather with natural supplies to resume journey.

The rainbow, unusual shades in sky and reflection of stars is simply beautiful. Pi also finds storm and lightning impressive. Pi never loses hopes even when his signals are not noticed by the passing by ship.

Pi’s hallucinations & expressions of RP for Pi’s communication are simply brilliant. The ocen is so realistic that you never feel that some of the shooting is done in artificial wave pool.

Finally after 227 days, life boat reaches to Mexico. Pi’s heart breaks when RP simply jumps from the life boat, stretches the body & disappears in jungle without even looking at Pi.

Insurance surveyors want to understand real reason for ship wreck from sole survivor Pi. They want believable story for their report so Pi replaces animals with real life characters like sailor, cook, Pi’s mom, Pi himself & story is accepted. Pi recovers slowly in hospital.

Film ends on happy note with glimpse of Pi’s happy family - wife, daughter & son Ravi.

Jai Ho - Another treat from Pandit Jasrajji

“Om Namo Bhagwate”… bhajan’s tune was raising, it was concert’s finale. Mesmerized crowd loudly applauded to maestro ‘Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraji’.   All disciples of Padma Vibhushan  Pandit Jasrajji who were sharing stage with their role model also broke from their trans with divine music.  It was 40th year of 'Pandit Motiram Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroh'

Nov, 2012’s venue CCRT near HiTech City distinguished from previous Heritage Location Chowmahalla Palace in Old City. Though palace's grand ambiance could not be matched in concrete jungle, addition of techie music lovers (identified by badges :) ) from surrounding area was surely a welcome change.

CCRT’s ground & surrounding garden landscape was tastefully decorated with lights. Panditji’s photos in various moods were brilliantly captured and displayed at entrance. At age of 82, the glow on Panditji’s face reflected his devotion for music. Jasrangi (jugalbandi between a male and a female vocalist, who each sing different ragas at the same time) had already started when we reached & we could find place to sit with other music lovers.

Is was simply a treat to listen to Jasrangi  between Ankita Joshi (Disciple of Panditji) and Krishna Bongane (Disciple of Padma Shree Ustad Rashid Khan). Tabla was also brilliantly played.

Show host Durga Jasraj invited Panditji on dais in  her lively style & Panditji blessed the eager crowd with ‘Jai Ho’.

It was time for short break now till instruments were set for Panditji. In winter’s pleasant weather, it was fun to enjoy Hyderbadi snacks like hot Mirchi Bada & Masala Wada with tea / coffee during interval. It was time to catch up with likeminded friends too.

Panditji started his prayers and the nonstop treat continued for hour and a half. Panditji was mainly accompanied by his disciple Sanjeev Abhyankar for vocal & shashank on flute… divine experience! Panditji always shares stage with junior disciples & gives them encouragement too. Very senior artists accompany him on tabla & harmonium.

Around 11:30 pm Durgaji reminded Panditji  about practical constraint & Panditji obliged crowd with their final demand for “Om Namo Bhagwate”… bhajan.  At conclusion crowd rose for standing ovation with cheers of ‘Jai ho’ & departed with memories of wonderful experience.

Seva Mela

‘Jiska Koi Nahi, uska to khuda hain yaro’

What a weekend it was! We made it to reach Zorastrian Club just in time at 11am on Sat, 6th Oct for inauguration of 2 day Seva  Mela organized during ‘Joy of Giving Week (JGW ) celebrated during 2nd to 8th Oct’ 2012’.

67 NGOs had put up stalls in ‘Seva Mela’ that is a platform for connecting to society with aim of motivating new patrons & volunteers.

All specially able children from ‘Sri Vidya School’ in their costumes for  stage show were enthusiastically waiting near entrance for Ribbon Cutting by  Ms. Katherine Dhanani (Consul General of USA) . This was 2nd consecutive year when Katherine dressed up in total Indian attire was spreading enthusiasm with her dynamic personality and passion for social service.

After delightful performance by students of ‘Sri Vidya’, Diksha took charge of the stage & invited all dignitaries of ‘United Way’ who were event sponsor. Diksha made sure that flow of program was maintained with professional perfection. The inspirational speeches by all dignitaries were crisp & conveyed their passion for giving back to society in various forms.

Inauguration was over in predefined time frame & delegates along with guests started visiting the stalls. It was heart touching to meet all volunteers of various organizations who were doing selfless service. If there is a will there’s a way… this was the message conveyed by all NGOs.

Each  stall was designed in different way to attract visitors. Some had games and few had attractive shopping options. Information about NGO & their needs were professionally conveyed so donors could easily decide about which option for donation to opt for. This enthusiasm also generated motivation for many new volunteers.

The NGO’s contribution to make the orphans independent , self-sufficient & confident reminded about Kishore Kumar’s song – ‘Jiska Koi Nahi, uska to khuda hain yaro’ (God will take care of you if you don’t have anyone to care for you).

Stalls & participants had variety of knowledge and information to offer for the people having right appetite. The main aim was to support destitute & orphans. In addition to this ‘Sahajyoga’ volunteers gave soothing experience of journey to self realization. The happiness and glow on their face conveyed a lot. If “When you are GOOD to others. . .You are BEST to yourself”.

‘I & Eye’ stall extended experience of using brail & day to day accessories like scale etc. for blinds. What an eye opening experience!

‘Adhya’ had innovative teaching methods with origami & puppets.

‘Thalassemia  Foundation’  created awareness about avoiding fatal disease with simple blood test.

Within no time, donations in kind & cash started pouring in. Enthusiastic team of Aurora Business School (ABS) motivated by Vardhaman Jain simultaneously sorted & passed on donations to needy.

With social message, it was time for entertainment too. Mainly young associates of various NGOs gave mind blowing performance in various art forms. The joy conveyed by orphan children ignited the whole crowd with new approach towards life.

Food Court was also organized by NGOs & offered lot of mouth watering but healthy cuisines.

As  event entered in 2nd day, more donations, better quality crowd was making the organizers nostalgic with satisfaction of successful event. As the evening approached, stage performances were driving the crowd crazy.  Finally it was time to say good bye to each other.
Many stalls had made tremendous profit and some had developed contact network; all this would boost their aim.

Seva Mela will also form network of participating NGOs to compliment each other’s activities & reach enhanced sector of needy.

All the visitors left venue with motivation and inspiration from organizers & participating NGOs.
